We picked blackberries. A friend has an acreage, so off we went, buckets in hand. Fighting the stinging nettles, thorns, spiders and snakes, we picked and picked. The dogs ate the lowest-hanging fruit right off the vines. Curious tree frogs appeared, then jumped away as quickly as they came. The berries are so sweet and juicy this year, with small seeds. Nice! We made pies, scones, and froze lots of these little flavor-bombs. Next week we'll make jam.
We found them hard to work with (mushy and staining everything they touch), so froze them. I love the way they look about five minutes after they come out of the freezer, all frosty!

So impressed was I by my scone experience, I wrote about it later that day...
ReplyDeleteI went out one frigid early morn, scraped the frost from the windshield and drove into Stanwood, delivering my tardy niece to school. It was a real blessing, as it turned out that I crawled under the sheets instead of checking on her at 6:30, as I ought. I’m sure I heard something earlier. Mmm, warAm sheets…
I was as thrilled by the warm, steamy air that escaped my scone, aromatic with large juicy blueberries throughout. The crusty top lifted, the warm insides of the reat gaped up at me, luscsious sweet scent, mouthwatering. I nibbled at the chunk of crusty outer layer, enjoying the texture, crunch under my molars, and the deliberat e savouring. Definitely gives our old English style scones a run for their money! Seriously, I wondered why so small a batch was left, because I was sure every lover of baked treats knew of these wonders. AND the baker came out to converse with customers, politely asking how I liked the scone. Her face beamed with the satisfaction of praise for a job well done. Skandia has a gem there.
The cashier also was immensely welcoming and polite, sharing the story that a local visiting Scotland preferred Skandia homestyle scones, she beamed. My timing couldn’t have been better, as various scone varieties were expected from the oven shortly. I forked over my sparse bills, sure the coffee would be good and, based on Skandia’s reputation, sure I would enjoy the treat, too. Thrilled, I was, for the whole experience. Timing IS everything. Thank you, ladies for a great start to my Stanwood experience.
